The Incheon Grand Bridge in South Korea is South Korea’s longest and the world’s 5th longest bridge. It stretches a total of 12.3 km with a main cable stayed span of 800 metres. The bridge links the new Incheon International Airport on Yongjing Island to New Songdo City and Seoul, carrying six lanes of traffic 74 metres above the main shipping channel in and out of Incheon Port.

VCE were asked to investigate the performance of the modular expansion joints of type LK24 because the bridge lies in a seismic region. A permanent monitoring system was installed at one of the expansion joint locations. It measures the movements of the 1st, 2nd and last lamella beams in the deck. The system also records the entire gap width in the joint as well as the temperature of the structure and the air. The measured data and the results are retrievable in the BRIMOS® Web-Interface.
